Tips for a Successful Online Kindermusik Class
At the heart of every level of Kindermusik is the parent-child relationship. These online Kindermusik classes are not designed to be entertainment for children. They are designed for family interaction and will not work without it. Even the children in Level 4 and 5 will need a partner for some of the activities (we will save those mostly for the end). So be prepared to play and have fun with your child!!
At the beginning of the day, remind your child that this is a Kindermusik Day and you will be seeing some friends online! This will help them prepare mentally for the class, which is very helpful for them. If we can help you out with a remind text about your child's level classes throughout the week, please let us know.
Provide a transition time for your child. When you attend class at our studio, your child has time in the car to think about what is to come. During your activity before the online class say something like, "After this, we will get ready for Kindermusik." While you are setting up for the class, let you child know what you are doing and that soon they will see their friends!
Place the items you have gathered for the class in a container (if it is helpful they can be out of the reach of your child) so that they are not a distraction during class.
To minimize distractions you might choose to remove toys, food, etc from the room where you will particpate, if possible. Please know we don’t mind any of these things, however some parents have been asking about how to help their child engage more fully and this is one way you can set your kiddo up for greater success attending to class.
Make sure you have an area around where you are sitting for dancing and movement.
Login anywhere from 2-5 minutes ahead of class time and be ready to share your child’s hello idea (don’t worry about hello ideas for foundations babies).
Engage with your child and do all of the activities with them. You are your child's most important teacher in Kindermusik (and everywhere else) - even more so when I am on a screen and not there in person. Your child will need for you to do each activity WITH them or maybe even FOR them if they do not engage right away. It takes younger children 12 times longer than adults to process what is asked of them, so your child may need to see you do the activity and encourage them for a bit before they join you. The younger the child, the more time they will need before they join in. They may not join you at all the first time, or they may start doing that activity after the next one has started. That's OK! They are learning SO MUCH by watching you joyfully participating and encouraging them. As we do most activities again over several weeks, you will likely find your child joining you as you continue to model the activity and they become more familiar with it.
Special note for children in Level 1 and Level 2 (ages 0-3). These young ones often wander in the Kindermusik classroom at our studio. They will probably wander at your home, too. They may be distracted by the device you are using or by items in your home. This is normal. Follow them and engage them with the music wherever they are. The routines of Kindermusik - the hello and goodbye songs, the instrument play, and storytime - will be a comfort to them at a time when everything else in our lives is a little unsettled. Just like an in-person Kindermusik class, feel free to adapt the activities to your child. If they need to walk around the room, take their hand and walk with them or swoop them up for a bouncy dance during lively music, etc.
Have fun together!!!
An important note about privacy
1. All participants in any Zoom class are known to us as registered Kindermusik families.
2. The remote classes are not recorded and will not be shared except for occassional Pathways to Learning educator training.
3. None of your personal information will be shared by us or by Kindermusik International.
4. While we would love for you to share pictures of your child enjoying their online class, Please do not take screen shots if other families are on the screen. You may take photos of your child enjoying class when the screen is either not in view or on speaker view (where you only see the teacher).
